After women empowerment, employment and educational improvement people are known to their rights and how can they use them. It is true that in India the divorce rate is still very low but it is a matter of concern that the rate is rapidly growing as the number of divorce petitions being filed in the Indian courts are raising higher. As compare to the rest of the world, Indian divorce rate is still far behind other countries. It’s because we understand the social boundaries and try to save the marriage in tough conditions too. If you compare the Indian villages to the Indian urban cities then will find that in village the divorce rates are still very low.
Possible reasons behind divorce rate in urban India are:
- In earlier days when it comes to divorce, it was the women who were socially blamed for the breakdown of marriage. It is seen that the parents also often don’t accept the divorced women when she return to her parental home. But now the society as well the views are being changed and people understood this fact that the divorce is not the end of the life of their daughter
- Indian society has been changed rapidly and after globalization and IT Boom, the growth becomes unstoppable. People generally don’t interfere in the personal matters like divorce. Hence unlike old times the divorced couple is saved from the critical glare of the society
- As Indian women are getting educated, they are getting the privilege to earn by working and now can maintain their own requirements. If they are getting nice salary then can maintain their children too and therefore if she is suffering from the mental torture then can get divorce without thinking about the post divorce financial conditions. It also makes the increment of the divorce rate in urban India.
- The Indian culture is also changing rapidly due to the influence of western culture. The Globalization has brought the cultures and ideologies together and so there comes the changes towards marriage in modern India. In this workaholic environment going with all the martial conditions are insufficient and people don’t have much time to give in their married life also. It makes the marriage bonding weak and as a result people go through the separation by taking the Divorce in India.
- Now the days nucleated families are higher in number than the Joint Families. Earlier in Joint family, the decision of marriage is taken by the elders of the family but now people itself decide for the person who they marry with. This decision sometimes goes wrong and they suffer from incompatible married relationship.

You can just imagine that India has the lowest divorce rate but still the growth in the divorce rate makes us think towards this situation and taking some serious steps to stop breaking these marriages.
